Due mainly to the efforts of Clive Woods, a local historian, Saltaire was given "Global Heritage Status" a couple of years ago. Here at Saltaire Alpacas we use Maremma sheepdogs to guard and protect are herd from predators, mostly coyote and neighborhood dogs. We have two dogs, Sophie and Caleb -- 4 years old and 18 months, respectively. We started with Sophie and fell in love with the breed, so we decided to bring in Caleb to give Sophie a hand and for company. They do their job quite well. With just Sophie here, we would periodically see a coyote in the woods, but she also wasn't much for barking. Since getting Caleb, who is serious about guarding his herd, we haven't seen hide nor hair of any woodland creature -- not even a squirrel.
